A Complete Guide for Comfortably Hiking on Your Period

It often seems like periods have a way of showing up at the most inconvenient times, like during weddings or vacations. For outdoor enthusiasts, getting your period right before a hiking trip can be frustrating or even disastrous, depending on your symptoms. Hiking on your period is a concern that Heather Anderson, an author, backpacking expert, and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, has encountered frequently among fellow hikers. Despite the challenges, you don’t have to cancel your hike just because it’s that time of the month. With some planning and expert tips, you can comfortably hike during your period.

Heather Anderson shared her experience of dealing with her period unexpectedly on a trip years ago and continued her journey without any issues. You can do the same with the right preparation. Here’s how:

### How to Use Menstrual Products on the Trail

– **Menstrual Cups:**
Menstrual cups are a popular choice among hikers for their convenience and efficiency. Remember to empty them according to your flow and clean them following Leave No Trace principles.

– **Tampons and Pads:**
Tampons and pads are also effective choices. Change them regularly and pack out used products in a discreet manner, such as using disposable bags like MaskIT’s bags.

– **Period Underwear:**
Period underwear can be useful for shorter trips. Remember to clean and dry them thoroughly after each use to prevent rash or infections.

### How to Store Your Menstrual Products While Hiking

To keep your menstrual products dry and secure on the trail, consider double-bagging them in Ziploc bags within a water-resistant toiletries or first aid bag. For extra protection in wet conditions, place the Ziploc bag inside a waterproof bag.

### How to Make Hiking on Your Period Comfortable

Preparation is key to ensuring a pleasant hiking experience while on your period. Bring an emergency kit, pain relief medication, and extra supplies of menstrual products to handle unexpected flow. Wear comfortable, moisture-wicking clothing, stay hydrated, and listen to your body’s signals to adjust your pace accordingly.

Remember, there’s no need to compromise your hiking plans just because of your menstrual cycle. With the right products and preparation, you can enjoy your outdoor adventures even during your period.
