Fixing BIPOC Underrepresentation in the Fitness Industry

In my six years of coaching in the boutique fitness realm, I have noticed a lack of diversity, particularly among Black and Brown individuals. It’s disheartening to scan a room and see very few faces that look like mine. This lack of representation in the wellness space can have detrimental effects on the health and well-being of BIPOC communities, who are already more prone to certain health conditions. The fitness industry needs to address this issue by diversifying its representation, decolonizing practices, reducing the high cost of entry, and increasing access to fitness spaces in marginalized communities. It’s time for well-established fitness brands to invest in creating a more inclusive and diverse environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued. Empowered Yoga is setting an example by celebrating and amplifying the work of BIPOC teachers and investing in staff training to ensure that all attendees feel represented and valued. It’s crucial that we have these conversations around inclusivity and diversity to create a more equitable fitness and wellness industry for all.
