Sore gums can be quite uncomfortable, which is why finding soothing remedies for gum discomfort is important. It is essential to note that sore gums can often be a sign of an oral health issue such as gum disease. Therefore, your first step should be to visit your dentist to address the underlying problem. Kevin Sands, DDS, a board-certified cosmetic dentist based in Beverly Hills, California, explains that poor oral hygiene, hormonal changes, allergic reactions, or certain medications can also contribute to gum soreness. Therefore, scheduling an appointment with your dentist is crucial to determine the best long-term solution for your achy mouth.

In the meantime, you can try dentist-approved home remedies to alleviate sore gums. Here are some effective options:

Apply a cold compress: Cold naturally numbs the gums, reduces swelling, and alleviates pain. Dr. Sands recommends applying a cold compress or ice wrapped in a cloth to the outside of the mouth for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day.

Rinse with saltwater: Salt’s natural antibacterial properties can reduce inflammation and kill harmful bacteria in the mouth. Dr. Sands suggests rinsing with a saltwater solution two to three times a day for quick relief of inflamed gums.

Apply aloe vera gel: Aloe vera gel has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can soothe inflamed gums and promote healing. Dr. Sands recommends applying a small amount directly to the affected gums a few times daily.

Try turmeric paste: Turmeric contains curcumin, known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Dr. Sands suggests making a paste with turmeric powder and water, applying it to the gums for 5 to 10 minutes daily.

While these natural remedies can provide temporary relief, it is important to avoid certain practices that may be harmful, such as overusing mouthwash containing alcohol, applying aspirin directly to the gums, or using hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash. Additionally, maintaining good oral hygiene, seeing your dentist regularly, following a balanced diet, and managing stress can help prevent sore gums.

If you experience persistent gum soreness, bad breath, color changes, or receding gums, it is essential to see a dentist for evaluation and treatment. Early detection and intervention can prevent the progression of oral health issues and promote overall gum health.
