While bugs, insects, and pests have their place in every ecosystem, dealing with mosquitoes on a camping trip, bed bugs disrupting a good night’s sleep, or house flies buzzing around can be quite bothersome. Let’s face it, no one really enjoys having bugs in their home. Luckily, there are natural ways to deter these pests, one of which is by planting pest-repelling plants in our gardens.

Many conventional methods of pest control can be harmful to both our health and the environment. The key is not to eliminate these creatures entirely but to discourage them from invading our living spaces.

Thankfully, there are numerous natural solutions available, such as using plants known for their bug-repelling properties.

16 plants that repel bugs

While the effectiveness of bug-repelling plants may vary for each individual, planting them in your garden can still add beauty and utility to your outdoor space.

Lemongrass

Known for its citronella oil that helps keep mosquitoes at bay, lemongrass is a great addition to your garden or patio to deter those pesky bloodsuckers.

Lemon thyme

Lemon thyme, when bruised and rubbed on the skin, can be effective against mosquitoes. It thrives in shallow, dry soil and can be a lovely addition to a rock garden.

Lemon Balm

Another plant helpful against mosquitoes, lemon balm can be rubbed on the skin for added protection. It’s always a good idea to do a skin test first before using it on larger areas.

Lavender

While popular for its relaxation properties, lavender is a natural repellent for moths, fleas, flies, and mosquitoes. Scatter dried bundles of lavender around your home to keep pests away.

Basil

In addition to its culinary uses, basil is disliked by flies and mosquitoes. Place basil pots inside and outside your home to ward off these biting insects.

Mint

Mint is another herb that repels mosquitoes and can be grown in pots around your living space. Be mindful as mint can be quite invasive if not contained.

By incorporating these bug-repelling plants and herbs in your garden, you can create a natural defense system against unwanted pests without the use of harmful chemicals. This not only benefits your family but also promotes a healthier environment for all.

We hope this list of plants that repel bugs will help you enjoy bug-free backyard gatherings!
