Toray Industries from Japan is set to provide membranes for a groundbreaking seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant in Saudi Arabia. This plant, known as Yanbu 4, will be the first of its kind in the Kingdom to utilize clean energy through a public-private partnership.
Located near the town of Ar Rayyis in the Madinah province, Yanbu 4 will have a daily production capacity of 450,000 cubic meters of potable water. It aims to supply drinking water to the Makkah and Madinah regions, crucial for millions of pilgrims on the Hajj pilgrimage. This development comes just in time for Ramadan, starting next week.

With Toray’s contribution, the RO elements for Yanbu 4 will help resolve water shortages not only in Makkah and Madinah but also in the wider Middle East and North Africa regions. Toray’s RO membranes have an impressive total water production capacity of 120,000,000 cubic meters daily, serving the needs of over 800 million people.
Ensuring access to clean water is a core focus of Toray Group’s Sustainability Vision, aligning with their long-term goals for sustainable growth. By providing cutting-edge membrane technologies and technical services, Toray aims to address water challenges in the Middle East and beyond as demand continues to rise.
