Our skin is a great barometer for our overall health, offering clues to what our body needs. Whether it’s red and peeling from a sunburn or allergic reaction, dry and flaky from eczema, or showing signs of discolored skin, swelling, or abnormal nail growth, our skin gives us important signs to pay attention to.

According to Dr. Sam Awan, a board-certified dermatologist, the skin is the easiest organ to examine for signs of underlying health issues. Conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol can all manifest themselves in the skin, giving us early warning signs that can be easily overlooked. Dr. Awan emphasizes the importance of regularly visiting a primary care doctor and focusing on good nutrition, exercise, and sleep to decrease the risk of developing these conditions.

Discoloration of the skin in shades of blue or purple could indicate poor circulation, while hyperpigmentation can be a sign of insulin resistance. Swelling in the legs or feet may be a symptom of heart, lung, or kidney issues, heart failure, or deep vein thrombosis. Clubbed fingers and toes may also point to heart and lung disease, while yellow or orange growths on the eyelids could be signs of high cholesterol or diabetes. Additionally, purple lines on the nails, known as splinter hemorrhages, can be a symptom of heart issues.

Knowing these skin signs can help you be more mindful of your heart health, and making lifestyle changes such as reducing high cholesterol, avoiding tobacco products, and caring for diabetes and high blood pressure can help prevent or manage these issues. When in doubt, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
